The Jersey City Assembly Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, formerly the Stanley Theatre, was refurshished twenty-five years ago by Jehovah’s Witness volunteers. This summer’s three-day assemblies continue on the subject, Draw Close to Jehovah.

In 1983 Jehovah’s Witnesses purchased the Stanley Theatre on Kennedy Blvd. in Jersey City. It was a historical landmark, and was original built in 1922. The Theatre was run down and in need of serious repairs. Work on the theatre commenced in 1984, and in approximately eight months, volunteers from local congregations, along with full-time workers from Brooklyn, where the headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses is located, worked hard to finish the structure in time for summer conventions in July of 1985. The refurbished Assembly Hall was dedicated in September of 1985.

The interior is beautiful, and the city’s historical council mandated that much of the original architecture and motiff remain original. Some of the original art work still exists. The main auditorium was originally created to parallel that of Venice, Italy.

The three day assemblies this year of Jehovah’s Witnesses focus on the theme, “Draw Close to Jehovah.” Sunday morning features a symposium concerning the qualities of God. The final English assembly will be held August 27-29 in Jersey city. Languages such as Korean, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, and Hindi have also attended, or will be attending in Jersey City. All are welcome and admittance is at no cost.
